I am not sure when this was taken but probably 1999 or 2000 or even earlier. Taman Tun? Do I have more from this set? Yes. Do I have any idea where they are? No. I am sure if I look hard enough I would find them. But til then.

Note from Maman: About the Album

In case you have not joined Maman’s Facebook yet, this was a message that he wrote on his wall:

message from maman teacher's pet

The gist of it:

  • Maman’s coming up with an album containing 10 brand new, unreleased tracks
  • He composed and wrote the lyrics to all of them and believes this is his best work to-date
  • In a few days, he will preview the first single off the album called Anugerah Cinta (loosely translated The Prize Gift of Love – but that is a bit inaccurate. I’ll wrack my brains for a better translation later) – where, when, how.. well, we’ll just have to wait and see til the next announcement. The preview will be a digital release and available for a limited time only so watch this space.
  • Maman is performing at the Singapore Expo on 18 January 2009, 5.30pm; so if you want to be amongst the first to hear his latest work, you know where to go.

Covers: Promise Her The Moon – Mr Big

Listen to Maman’s version of Promise Her The Moon by Mr Big, it is actually an MP3 but since the easiest streaming that I know is via YouTube, I embed it in here as a static video. For the downloadable MP3, please go to the Download page.

Below, lyrics and video of the song performed live by Mr Big in a concert in Japan. Coincidentally, this happens to be my favourite Mr Big song along with Goin’ Where the Wind Blows; I even blogged about it in Killing Time.

PROMISE HER THE MOON

Hey, yeah yeah
You don’t know what you’ve got
Till the love is almost gone
This time, yeah she’s given up
Still in a state of shock
I should’ve seen it coming on
It’s too late for waking up
Her mind’s made up
I know the dream is over
But my heart just can’t let go
She’s too good to be forgotten
Too good to be true
Before my world is torn apart
I’ll promise her the moon
I’ll promise her the moon
I was too blind to notice her
Wrapped up in myself
Workin’ hard overtime, night and day
I thought we were so secure
Can’ imagine someone else
Could come between us
And take her away
Her mind’s made up
I know the dream is over
But my heart just can’t let go
She’s too good to be forgotten
Too good to be true
Before my world is torn apart
I’ll promise her the moon
I’ll promise her the moon
And all the time she stood by me
I never said “I love you”
Yeah, I kept it deep down in my soul
And all the while I’ve been a fool
yeah, yeah yeah.

Covers: Kesan Di Matamu

This is may be one of Maman’s favourite covers, one that he’s performed many times in public. It was originally sung by the late Bapak Chrisye, a well-known Indonesian artiste. See the myspace tribute page to Bapak Chrisye here.

The particular video featured here was taken in 1998, at a rooftop concert organised by ROTTW magazine (which I am told is still alive and well til today, but only available in print though so no links folks). Maman was backed by a group of musicians known as Soulpilot.

Kesan di Matamu is loosely translated as Imperfections In Your Eyes.

This was how Bapak Chrisye wrote and performed the song

Unreleased: Warna Kasih

An unreleased track called ‘Warna Kasih’ (The Colour of Love), written in mid 2007. Will the full studio version ever see the light of day? Your guess is as good as mine. Transliteration and MP3 strip to follow soon.

Covers: Soulmate by Natasha Bedingfield

Update: I finally got my hands on the original video source so you don’t have to go through the hassle of signing in/up for Facebook. Here you go:

============================================

This is Maman’s cover of Soulmate by Natasha Bedingfield. This video is featured on Maman’s Facebook page. I’m sorry but I can’t pull and embed it here in this blog.

Please go here to see the video. You will need to be a Facebook member and sign in and be his friend in order to see it! Yes yes I know it’s a pain. Let’s see if I can get a way around it. Watch this space.

In meantime, by comparison, the original version by the original singer, from a performance live at Abbey Road.
